Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Emington, Illinois. If a hair or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise is in hair testing. We operate testing facilities throughout the country, enabling us to cater to your needs. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair analysis.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly replaced traditional methods. Many businesses, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it offers a long-term overview of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair testing can deliver a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, tough to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and anything beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, the same quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s records. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although it’s a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in many samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation while also adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug testing is difficult to compromise, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical substance use data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent usage detection: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
