Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fairmount, Illinois. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers available in cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair testing facilitates detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offers other customized testing solutions.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a predominant method for conducting drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests as opposed to traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A major advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, and its nearly unfoolable observed collection process. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers insights by securing biomarkers within the hair strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to three months. It is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair are specific to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Summary of Procedures

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory's system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any missing data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial examination for substance misuse. It serves as a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most specimens, though a positive Screening result must be validated for court validity. Specimens that are potentially positive during Screening require a confirming test.

Where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the original sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any affirmative Screening findings is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The laboratory processes from Accessioning to Confirmation adhere to both the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use over months, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being known as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
