Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Farmersville, Illinois. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is required, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in this area, with testing facilities across the entire nation ready to conduct a hair analysis. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Many businesses, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those monitoring probationary conditions. The key advantage is a longer 90-day detection window and its resistance to tampering. However, urine tests are more precise for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period extending up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equals 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a proportionate quantity of body hair might be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening need follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is exceptionally hard to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical overview: It can showcase a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
