Accredited Drug Testing proudly offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fayetteville, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of administering these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the top of your head or body is used. Hair testing is applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict drug policies and are required by courts and probation programs. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, carried out in a supervised setting, making it very difficult to manipulate results. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering a prolonged record of substances. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol use for up to 3 months. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes various other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab's system. It entails verification of proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. While it’s a cost-effective method to negate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court usage. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair at a minor concentration than in additional methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug testing is notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug screening is notably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical data: This test illustrates drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs appear in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the measurable quantity of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
