In Fidelity, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our company specializes in these services, offering testing centers in cities across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. Our hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for testing. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor them over classic urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, benches of justice, and probation officers rely on such tests. Their advantage lies in the longer drug detection period, lasting up to 90 days, and difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive history by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection timeframe for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, resilient to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hairs (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, optimal for analytical purposes. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Consider using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab analysis of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. It includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data needed beyond what is supplied by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening entails an initial assessment for drug usage. Although a cost-efficient approach to discount drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptability. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require an extra confirmation step.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in alternative methodologies (such as urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug screening proves to be the most intricate methodology.

Any positive screening outcomes are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical data provision: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over weeks or months, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this specific test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
