Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Forest Park, IL. When in need of drug or alcohol analysis, our centers nationwide, adept in hair testing, are at your service. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically needed from either your crown or body. We provide screenings for substances, including specialized hair testing solutions for drugs, alcohol/ETG.

Hair follicle testing has gained traction as the preferred method for drug analysis over recent years. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals now favor it over traditional urine tests. It's highly favored by companies with zero-tolerance drug policies and is a staple for court-mandated and probationary screenings. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, and a supervised collection process ensures its integrity. However, for detecting more recent drug use within a five-day window, the urine test remains unbeaten.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures markers of alcohol and drugs within the strands as it grows, providing a timeline of use. Gathering hair close to the scalp can reveal substance use for approximately a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and is conveniently transportable.

Securing a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (akin to a #2 pencil's circumference) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for initial screening and further verification. For EtG assessments, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is ideal. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the hair. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar volume of body hair can suffice. "Head hair" denotes only scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the sample into the laboratory's database. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and records any extra details absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial assessment for drug presence. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, further confirmation is necessary for legal acceptance of a positive result. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive during Screening, further hair extraction from the initial collection occurs for the Extraction phase. Here, drug concentration in hair is notably lower than in urine or oral samples, making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests identify drug use covering up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Low potential for deceit: Cheating a hair test is challenging, ensuring result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: Reflects drug consumption patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent use: Drugs appear in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
