In Forreston, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether for hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair assessments and boast centers nationwide, including all cities, for hair analysis. Typically, hair should measure 1.5 to 2 inches from the head crown or body. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other specific hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has surged in popularity as a preferred method of substance inspection. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly select hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests are valued for their extended drug detection timeline, up to 90 days. Collected under observation, these tests are hard to manipulate, though urine remains superior for recent consumption detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. The hair locks in biomarkers within its growing strands, providing a comprehensive history of substance use. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for nearly a 90-day period. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for primary checks and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examining over 10 screening panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to ascertain the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory journey of processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This incorporates ensuring the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data entries not included in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves a preliminary, quick appraisal for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to discount drug presence in most samples, a positive Screening outcome necessitates further confirmation to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that indicate potential positivity during Screening demand a subsequent verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair from the original collection is used for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis particularly challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use extending to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It enables the tracing of substance use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent ingestion: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigment and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the testing process evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
