Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Freeman Spur, Illinois. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this service and have centers available in cities across the country to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other purposes.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and for probation scenarios. The key advantage is a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process, making it very hard to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. It provides an extended record of these substances by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a detection window extending up to three months. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair fibers (similar in size to a #2 pencil) ensures 100mg of hair for optimal screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest determining the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial sample processing into a lab's system. This step involves checking if the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary scan for drugs of abuse. While it offers an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positive samples from Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing the most intricate method.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use for a period reaching 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is quite challenging, thus yielding more dependable results.
  • Serves historical analysis: It shows drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests are costlier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair may vary by factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
