Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Garden Prairie, Illinois. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol examination via hair, our expertise lies in hair testing. We operate testing facilities across all cities nationwide capable of administering hair tests. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body available. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

In the past few years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug testing. A variety of employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. It's popular among organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and for individuals in probation scenarios. Its main advantage is the extensive detection window, up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method provides an extended history of substance intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair has the advantages of being easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches of hair, consisting of about 200 strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, equals 100mg, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional factors, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process for processing a drug test in a laboratory consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary input of a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any data that’s missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial quick assessment for the presence of drugs. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use for most samples, a positive result at this stage requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positive cases in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. In this step, substances are extracted from the hair in much more dilute concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive findings in Screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have limited time frames.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Insight into usage pattern: It reveals a history of drug use over time, instead of just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand being analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
