Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Genoa, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with facilities available across all major cities nationwide that can conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body can be sampled. Hair tests can diagnose for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods has surged. More employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts are turning to this alternative instead of common urine tests. Such tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and probationers. The standout advantage is the detection span, offering insights on drug usage for up to 90 days, secured with observed collection, and resistant to falsification. Yet, urine tests remain superior for recent (up to 5 days) substance detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands, comparable in size to a #2 pencil, collected closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG and expanded panels beyond 10, 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary input of a sample into the lab's system. This process includes ensuring that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any data that isn't available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for negating drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be acceptable in legal contexts. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In the case where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than with other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a briefer duration of detection.
  • Cheating is challenging: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers chronological data: It can track a pattern of drug use across time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes between 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and growth rate variations can influence the level of drug metabolites detected in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Genoa, IL offers numerous advantages. Primarily, it provides an extensive observation window, capturing substance use history over months rather than just days.

Also, the accuracy of hair tests surpasses that of urine tests. With a hair sample, the chances of tampering are significantly reduced, making it a more secure and reliable method of assessment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug tests provide a much extended detection window in Genoa, IL, allowing employers to view a comprehensive history of substance use over a 90-day period. This enables a thorough evaluation of an individual’s drug consumption habits.

Employers benefit from the ability to detect long-term patterns of drug abuse that would otherwise be invisible to standard testing, thus equipping them with a more transparent substance history. This insight aids in informed decision-making regarding hiring or retention.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Genoa, IL, hair follicle testing is a reliable and tamper-resistant method of drug screening. Unlike urine tests, the risk of sample adulteration is significantly minimized, ensuring dependable results every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
