Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Gifford, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in conducting hair tests, with facilities available in all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analytes.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach for screening drug consumption. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals on probation due to its longer detection window, often extending up to 90 days, and its observed collection process, making it difficult to tamper with. For detecting drug use in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair locks biomarkers within its strands, offering an extended history of substance usage. When obtained near the scalp, the detection period for alcohol and drugs can span up to around three months. The collection process is straightforward, it’s somewhat resistant to tampering, and it is convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test outcomes involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. The process verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. While being a cost-efficient solution to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug testing is among the most complex procedures.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming any positive screening results. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Challenges in falsification: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, improving result accuracy.
  • Provides historical patterns: It shows patterns of drug use over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Alterations due to hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
