Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Gladstone, Illinois. For those requiring a hair or alcohol analysis, our centers are equipped throughout the nation for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. These tests can discern the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, there has been an increasing shift toward hair follicle drug assessments. Many firms, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are essential for companies with strict drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on parole. A significant advantage of hair testing is its capability to detect drug use over 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to manipulate. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can yield a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

For a sample presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks usage trends: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers substantial advantages over traditional urine tests in Gladstone, IL. These tests provide a broader detection capability, capturing drug use patterns over longer periods and delivering more resilient results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
