Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glencoe, Illinois. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing and boasts testing centers in cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to fit specific testing needs.

The trend in drug testing methods increasingly favors hair follicle tests. A variety of entities, including employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, often mandate hair testing over traditional urine assessments. Suitable for zero-tolerance environments, hair tests provide a broader detection window of drug usage, up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are highly resistant to manipulation. For drug use within the past five days, however, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair examination has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair naturally records extended histories of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of its developing shaft. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers a retrospective detection capability of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirming results. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. By “head hair,” we mean specifically scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other hair types including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

Lab processing of drug test results involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking the sample's packaging and transit integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, expedient evaluation for substance abuse. Despite its economic advantages for excluding drug usage in most cases, any positive findings from the Screening stage require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results must undergo secondary verification.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sectioned from the original specimen for Preparation. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much less detectable quantities than in other forms of testing (e.g., urine or oral swabs), making hair drug examinations more complex.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Prior to confirmation, all samples with preliminary positive results are cleansed as necessary. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug activity extending up to 90 days, compared to urine assessments which offer briefer detection spans.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug evaluations offer heightened accuracy due to their high resistance to tampering.
  • Tracks usage trends: They provide insight into drug habits over time, beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Substances take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elemental differences like hair pigment and unique growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests," these examinations actually focus on analyzing the hair strands above the scalp rather than the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Glencoe, IL

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering a larger detection window and greater accuracy in Glencoe. Unlike urine tests, which provide a limited detection period, hair tests reveal drug use over a more extended timeline, ensuring no recent activity goes unnoticed.

Hair testing offers superior reliability, making it nearly impossible to manipulate the results unlike solutions commonly employed to alter urine tests. This combination of precision and integrity makes hair follicle testing the preferred choice among employers and individuals.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
