In Goodfield, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to, with testing sites in every city throughout the nation. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair can be an alternative. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice in drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors are favoring hair tests over the regular urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers prefer these tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, their in-person supervised collection process, and their resistance to manipulation. Nevertheless, for tracking drug use in the last five days, urine tests maintain top accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests and/or those over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair specifically, while "body hair" refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory system. This process consists of verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial, cost-effective screening to check for drug abuse in most samples. However, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during screening need a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is gathered from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
