Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug examinations in Grand Chain, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in such assessments, with centers throughout all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can suffice. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized hair testing choices.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted the hair follicle method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are employed by zero-tolerance policy employers, legal systems, and people under probation. The key advantage of these tests is their extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, making them almost tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become regarded as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for up to around 90 days. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional tests, or when beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair references all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for analyzing a drug test sample consist of four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase where a sample is logged into the lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry if it's not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, a rapid assessment for drug abuse is carried out. While Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, results that show a positive screen require further confirmation for court validity. Samples indicating a presumed positive in Screening need secondary verification.

If a presumed positive is detected during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex method.

Any positive results from screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Up to 90 days for drug detection, compared to a shorter span for urine tests.
  • Difficult to falsify: The likelihood of cheating a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: Capable of showing a drug usage pattern rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally more costly than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
