Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Grandview, Illinois. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have a wide network of centers nationwide to facilitate such tests. For most tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These hair analyses are capable of detecting drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing solutions.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method, often replacing the conventional urine test. This change is driven by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, especially where a zero-tolerance policy is in place. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeframe, generally extending up to 90 days. It is conducted under observation and is nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline for alcohol and drug use by retaining biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing within a laboratory's framework. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admittance. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Presuming a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), deeming hair drug testing as the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection time of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can indicate a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Grandview, IL outshines urine testing with its superior detection capabilities. While urine screens are traditional, hair tests offer a longer detection period and greater reliability. Terms like zero-tolerance policies favor hair tests, providing a robust method against attempts to circumvent drug testing protocols.

In Grandview, IL, hair follicle testing provides an impressive detection window, tracing drug use up to 90 days. This extensive timeframe ensures employers gain a deeper understanding of a person's substance use history, offering a comprehensive review beyond what shorter-window tests can achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
