In Greenville, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle assessments for drug use. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing has experts in hair testing with facilities across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in recent years for drug assessments. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair over urine tests. These are utilized by workplaces with strict no-drug policies, judicial requirements, and probation checks. Hair tests offer a lengthy detection window of up to 90 days, are supervised during collection, and are challenging to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has evolved into a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and other substances by enclosing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step entails confirming the sample was sealed and transported accurately, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening represents an initial rapid check for substance misuse. Though Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Delivers historical information: It shows a timeline of drug use over a duration, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
