In Gridley, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are accessible in cities from coast to coast, ready to administer hair and alcohol tests when needed. For most cases, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown, or elsewhere on the body, suffices. Our tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options for hair testing.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence recently due to its heightened reliability. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are shifting from urine testing to hair-based assessments. This preference owes to the longer detection window—up to 90 days—ensuring a diligent collection and minimizing cheating. Despite its efficacy, urine tests remain the first choice for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It retains a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand’s fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs within an approximate 3-month span. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch snippet consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for screening and follow-up confirmation. For conducting EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a suggestion of collecting 150mg of the specimen is made. Employing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a lab’s system. Procedures include confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not initialized by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial examination for drugs of abuse. As a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this scene, substances are extracted from hair lower in concentration compared to alternate methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as dictated. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that exhibit a shorter window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Documentation of usage history: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
