Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gulfport, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with centers in all cities nationwide. To perform the test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, legal systems, and probation programs. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, which makes cheating nearly impossible. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This comprises checking that the sample has been sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any extra data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most cases, though a positive screen requires confirmation to support legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the first specimen and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to tamper with: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can offer a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Attributes like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Gulfport, IL, the benefits are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and durability. While urine tests can detect recent use, hair tests provide a reliable history of up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
