Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hampton, Illinois. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, boasting testing facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair exams. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Hair evaluations may be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent times, drug screening methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug examinations. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often favor hair drug assessments over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial entities, and probationary individuals for their primary advantage: an extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, minimizing the potential for deceit. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting drugs within a five-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary laboratory processing stages for drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This requires ensuring the sample's sealing and shipment were correctly executed, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing additional data input that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for drug inhalation. Although it's a cost-efficient strategy for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample screens positive initially, further hair is extracted from the specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is what makes hair drug screening notably challenging.

Any positive Screen findings are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples noted as presumptive positives undergo a thorough wash before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug intake up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time, rather than merely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
