Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hardin, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing. We operate testing centers across all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Such tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, collected under strict observation, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing an extensive timeline of alcohol and other substances. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, equates to 100mg of hair—the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test workflow consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with the sample entering into the lab’s system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, court acceptance requires confirmation of any positive findings. Samples showing positive results in Screening demand further confirmation.

For any samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening, more hair is extracted from the existing specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods, such as urine or oral fluid, which is why hair analysis is considered a challenging process.

Confirmation for positive Screening outcomes uses methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal substance use within a 90-day scope, contrasting with the shorter period of urine tests.
  • Challenges in tampering: Hair tests are notoriously difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Tracks usage patterns: The test can illustrate a timeline of substance use, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigment and individual growth rates can impact the presence of drug metabolites in hair strands.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests" at times, the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
