Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harrison, Illinois. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, our multiple centers across various cities Nationwide ensure accessibility. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the head or body for testing. Hair tests offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific options.

Nowadays, the practice of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation services rely on these tests. A key benefit of hair testing is its capacity to reveal drug use for up to 90 days, with an observed collection making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair provides a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional screens, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample in the lab system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a rapid assessment for substance abuse. While it is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair testing a complex process.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is tough to trick, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug use over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
