In Harwood Heights, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you need to undergo a drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has centers nationwide that exclusively offer hair testing. For this test, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be taken from the head or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other customized testing requirements.

There has been an increasing trend toward utilizing hair follicle drug tests over recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this method to the conventional urine test. The appeal is owing to its use in zero-tolerance environments and legal situations. A hair test’s advantages include its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and being very hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an efficient means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended-term record of substance use by securing biomarkers within its growing strand fibers. When procured near the scalp, hair is capable of revealing substance use history for nearly a 3-month span for both alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional elements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample of the specimen is advisable. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. When we discuss head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. It includes checking the sample for proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismissing drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require subsidiary confirmation.

In instances where a sample registers as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, substances are not extracted from the hair in as high concentrations as with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug inspections the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result transpires through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Increased accuracy: Cheating on a hair drug evaluation is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Long-term user data: It allows for observing a drug use pattern over a duration rather than just recent use specifics.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection onset: Hair typically requires about 5-7 days post-use for drugs to become detectable.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally bear a higher cost compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the amounts of drug metabolites within hair strands.

Note: Though often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the actual examination concerns the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
