Accredited Drug Testing in Hettick, Illinois, offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for testing. Our hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in recent years as an effective method for drug screening. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation commonly use these tests. One key advantage is the extended detection period for drug use, spanning up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process that minimizes cheating risks. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting drugs consumed within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized for its effectiveness, hair testing has emerged as an invaluable resource in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains substantial historical data of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests beyond 10 panels, EtG, or additional testing, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing phase of a sample within the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Though screening efficiently rules out drug use in most instances, confirming a positive result is imperative for court validity. Presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drug extraction occurs at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any screening positives is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples presenting presumptive positives receive necessary washing. Every processing stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited window.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair testing is remarkably challenging to manipulate, thus ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides data regarding substance use patterns over time, unlike tests that focus only on recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair necessitates approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
