Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hickory Hills, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing locations across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

In recent years, using hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has become more prevalent. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services frequently employ hair follicle tests. These tests offer a significantly extended detection window for drug use, often up to 90 days, involve an observed collection process, and are difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for revealing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If cut near the scalp, hair can suggest a detection window for drugs and alcohol of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, added evaluations, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically reference scalp hair whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the lab for processing a drug test comprised of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the primary handling of a sample within a lab's workflow. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary quick test for drugs. Although Screening offers a low-cost means to discount drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court validity. Samples that test positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drug substances are isolated from hair at much lesser concentrations than with other methods (like urine or saliva), which accounts for hair drug screening being one of the most challenging testing methods.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test poses significant challenges, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insight: It showcases usage patterns across time rather than just current habits.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Hickory Hills, IL, excel over traditional urine tests due to their superior detection capabilities. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair testing provides a more comprehensive historical view of substance use, covering a detection window of up to 90 days. This extended period makes hair testing a more reliable choice for employers and professionals.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Hickory Hills, IL, is its extended detection window. Unlike urine tests, which are limited in duration, hair analysis can identify substance use over a 90-day period. This long detection time offers a full picture of an individual's substance habits, aiding employers in making better-informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
