Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hidalgo, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is required, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body in most situations. Hair analyses can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method for drug screening. Whether for employers, courts, or Substance Abuse experts, many now favor a hair test over the usual urine test. This method is used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probation cases. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, done in a supervised manner and hard to deceive. Yet, for drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now viewed as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a prolonged timeline of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month examination period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A section of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial stages in processing a drug test outcome in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a lab’s system, which includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing additional data entries not completed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening facilitates a preliminary swift evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction, where drugs are extracted at a much diluted concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of positive screenings is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessitated. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days post-consumption, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection frame.
  • Hard to evade: Evading a hair drug test is immensely difficult, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows historical use: Exhibits a timeline of drug usage, not merely recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Restricted recent use detection: Drugs are typically discernable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth variations may impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
