Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams throughout Hodgkins, Illinois. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair assessments with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair or body hair is required for analysis, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle tests have seen a rise in popularity as a method of drug evaluation. Increasingly, employers, judicial bodies, and professionals involved in Substance Abuse opt for hair screenings over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers holding strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probationary procedures. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection processes making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within a recent five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential stages in laboratory processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample within the laboratory system. This process verifies the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for substance misuse. While Screening economically rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening must have secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are assumed positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can map a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
