In Hooppole, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers located in every city across the country, ready to perform your needed hair or alcohol test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become the method of choice for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer it over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies mandate these tests. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over 90 days, using rigorous collection processes that are hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use (up to 5 days), urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures enduring evidence of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to gather hair samples, they are relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. By scalp hair, we refer exclusively to hair from the scalp. Body hair refers to all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result assessment in a laboratory comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data import not accounted for by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs a preliminary quick assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening offers an economical means to negate drug consumption in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening demand further verification.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is removed from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accounting for the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are pre-washed before verification if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a reduced detection range.
  • Cheating is difficult: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: A delay of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing against urine testing reveals several advantages. In Hooppole, IL, hair tests excel in offering greater accuracy and reliability. While urine tests primarily detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a more comprehensive history, identifying usage patterns over several months. This capability makes hair testing a favored choice for many organizations with strict policy requirements.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Hooppole, IL, offer an extended detection window that spans up to 90 days. This protracted timeframe allows employers to gain a deeper understanding of an individual’s substance use history. Instead of limiting the scope to recent activity as urine tests do, hair testing uncovers long-term patterns that aid in making well-informed employment or monitoring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One significant advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their tamper-resistant nature. In Hooppole, IL, this method combats attempts to alter or contaminate samples, providing agencies with hard-to-refute evidence. The inherent design of hair testing ensures a reliable outcome, affording greater confidence in proceeding based on its findings, reducing the risk of inaccurate results stemming from sample manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
