In Hull, Illinois, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair tests, we have numerous testing locations in cities across the Nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is generally required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific test needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a common method in recent years. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by those with stringent zero-tolerance policies, probation conditions, and legal proceedings. A key advantage is the extended detection window, often spanning 90 days, and it requires supervised collection, making it highly reliable. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting very recent drug use, within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand trap biomarkers, providing a comprehensive historical account of alcohol and drugs. Hair sampled near the scalp can reveal drug use within an approximate 3-month window. It's straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, roughly equating the thickness of a #2 pencil and containing about 200 strands, weighs 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By "head hair", we mean only scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is introduced into the lab’s system, confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial check for drug abuse, providing a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most samples; however, positive screens require confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positives need further confirmation.

If the Screening stage shows a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase extracts drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than techniques like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screen is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's extremely tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It presents a chronological pattern of drug use over time, instead of detecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hull, IL, hair follicle testing showcases distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One significant benefit is its broader detection scope, identifying drug use long before substances are present in urine. Hair tests can unveil up to 90 days of consumption history, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.

Employers opting for hair tests value the accuracy and reliability this method provides. Compared to urine tests, hair sampling remains unaffected by temporary abstinence or sample tampering techniques, further cementing its role in drug testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle tests in Hull, IL, is unmatched. These tests analyze hair samples to uncover drug habits over a lengthy period, usually up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a comprehensive perspective on an individual's substance use.

This method serves as a valuable tool for employers aiming to maintain a drug-free workplace and make informed hiring decisions, especially when assessing the long-term behavior of potential employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Hull, IL, stand out with their tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests, where samples might be altered, hair samples are collected under observation, minimizing the risk of deceit. This ensures the authenticity and reliability of the drug test results.

Employers find peace in knowing that hair testing is a robust approach to minimize common fraudulent practices, ultimately providing confidence in the integrity of the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
