Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Humboldt, Illinois. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is supported by testing centers across the nation. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more common method for drug testing. It's favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over the basic urine test. With a zero-tolerance drug policy, employers and court systems are likely to require a hair drug test. It offers a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, conducted through an observed process, and is difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can indicate alcohol and other drugs use for roughly a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) located nearest the scalp is necessary for acquiring 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or other panels beyond 10, a sampling of 150mg is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair can be substituted. Head hair denotes scalp hair solely, while body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a lab drug test result, which are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample into the lab's system. It ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not included via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives require a confirmatory test.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are washed if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter time frames.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronicles historical use: Offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Humboldt, IL, hair follicle testing significantly surpasses traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair tests reveal substance history over several months for a comprehensive profile.

The reliability of hair follicle tests in Humboldt, IL, stems from their detection precision. This testing method effectively uncovers long-term substance use patterns, providing a more thorough analysis than urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
