Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ina, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise at Accredited Drug Testing includes specialized hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body can be used for testing. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly used for drug screening purposes. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is preferred by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation contexts. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, along with its observed collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. Sampling hair close to the scalp can provide roughly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of adulteration, and is easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for this purpose. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps necessary for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory step where a sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory’s framework. This step validates that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry absent from an automated chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a quick review to detect drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to be legally viable. Samples yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a pattern of drug use over a length of time, rather than just a snapshot of recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
