Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Industry, Illinois. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched and extends to testing facilities in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been part of drug test methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are vital for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courtroom settings, and probation oversight. The main strength of hair testing lies in its extended detection period—up to 90 days—making it nearly foolproof. For recent drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective methodology for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and narcotics by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands. When taken from the scalp's vicinity, hair can yield a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other narcotics. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 categories, collecting 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable volume of body hair is an alternative. Mention of head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary entry of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step involves checking that the seal and shipment were intact, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening is an efficient means to exclude drug use in most cases, a verified screen is necessary for legal proceedings. Any sample with a presumptive positive Screening requires further confirmation.

If Screening returns a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the existing sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are gleaned from hair at notably low concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening compared to other methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples positive in initial screenings are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and standards accredited to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is significantly difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can showcase drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become identifiable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand and not the follicle embedded in the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Industry, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. The superior detection accuracy of hair tests ensures that even minimal traces of substances are identified. While urine tests cover a shorter span, hair tests offer a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive picture of an individual’s substance habits.

With their enhanced reliability, hair tests offer a more foolproof solution in comparison to urine tests, making them the preferred choice for accuracy in screening and ensuring a drug-free environment for employers.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Industry, IL, provides an extended detection window, offering a detailed view of an individual’s substance use over the past 90 days. This broader timeframe is crucial for employers seeking to evaluate a candidate’s long-term drug habits or monitor an existing employee for sustained compliance with drug policies.

The extended detection window of hair testing provides a comprehensive overview of an individual’s drug use history, making it an invaluable tool for organizations to maintain a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

By significantly mitigating the risk of sample tampering, hair follicle testing in Industry, IL, ensures dependable results. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are resilient against adulteration, preserving their integrity throughout the testing process.

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests guarantees sample authenticity, providing organizations with trustworthy data on an individual's substance use, critical for upholding zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
