Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Itasca, Illinois. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with testing locations in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized analyses.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly included hair follicle examinations. Many employers, legal systems, and professionals in Substance Abuse now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle screens benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation cases. The major advantage is the prolonged detection period, lasting approximately 90 days, where collection is observed and nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for drug usage within the last five days, urine testing remains precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a strong method for spotting drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a prolonged track record of substances by ensnaring biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and conveyed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drug substances. While Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires validation to be legally permissible. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require a confirmatory step.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can spot drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use spanning a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent usage: It roughly takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
