Accredited Drug Testing in Ivanhoe, IL, offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For those needing drug or alcohol tests, our testing centers nationwide, including hair analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom tests.Testing needs 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the crown or body.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle over urine tests for drug screening has risen. Courts, employers, and substance abuse experts increasingly require it.It benefits zero-tolerance employers with a 90-day detection period, and incorruptible test.
However, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The effectiveness of hair testing in identifying substance intake has been acknowledged. Hair retains a historical record of substance consumption by encapsulating markers within the strands of the growing hair. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol use over approximately a three-month duration. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transport is convenient.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent weight of body hair may be procured. Head hair exclusively denotes scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of a sample's incorporation into a lab's workflow. This step confirms the sample's intact sealing and proper dispatch, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any pending data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While this step is economical for identifying drug absence in most samples, legal validity requires that a positive result undergoes confirmation. Samples with a preliminary positive outcome in Screening necessitate further verification.

In instances where Screening indicates a presumptive positive, an additional amount of hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than those used in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive results from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All specimens marked as presumptively positive undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: This test outlines a timeline of drug use over a prolonged duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A timeframe of about 5-7 days is needed before substances become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Influences such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", it examines the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
