Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Junction City, Illinois. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in these exams with facilities across the Nation capable of performing them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, taken from the scalp or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance detection. Many organizations, judicial systems, and addiction professionals prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by companies with strict no-drug policies and are common for court or probation assessments due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collection under direct observation, and difficulty to falsify. Nonetheless, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fiber of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat challenging to manipulate, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or testing beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. It is recommended to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening involves an initial overview for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen still requires confirmation to be valid for court proceedings. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is quite hard to outmaneuver a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days subsequent to usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
