In Kane, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you need a test for substances or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available nationwide. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp, or body hair may suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years as a method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer the hair drug test over traditional urine tests. With hair follicle tests, companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, the courts, and probation services see significant benefits due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, challenging to falsify results, and precise observation methods. Yet, for detecting recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken near the roots, it offers roughly a three-month timeline for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient for mailing.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hairs (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) from near the head, yields 100mg of hair—the optimal amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab consists of these key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is securely sealed and transported, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for common drug abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly means to exclude drug use in most cases, though any indications of a positive result need subsequent confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. During this process, drugs are separated from hair at notably lower levels than through other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), hence why hair drug testing is among the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair testing can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It delivers a trend of substance use over time, not just a recent snapshot.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Hair traits like color along with personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the testing evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
