Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services across Kansas, Illinois. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers available nationwide for this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing needs.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has trended towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now often favor this test over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are popular among organizations with strict no-drug policies and probationary programs, having the benefit of a 90-day detection window and being nearly impossible to manipulate. That said, urine tests remain the best option for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers within the strands as they grow, offering an extended history of alcohol and drug use. A sample collected near the scalp can provide a detection timeframe of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

An optimal screening and confirmation sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG tests, additional screenings, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary process of entering a sample into a laboratory system. This stage involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination of samples for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial specimen is extracted for further analysis. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the methodologically most challenging.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests provide detection for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The accuracy of hair drug tests is heightened by their resistance to tampering.
  • Provides historical data: They offer a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Tests Beat Urine: Hair follicle testing in Kansas, IL offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Hair tests extend the detection window significantly, capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
