Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Keeneyville, Illinois. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate testing facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. In most instances, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is required. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other specific hair test options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. This method is increasingly demanded by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals, preferring it over the standard urine test. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers opt for hair drug testing due to its extended detection period, typically covering up to 90 days. Also, the observed sample collection makes it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for testing recent drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers roughly a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing approximately 200 strands, comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil, provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The main four steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system, involving verification that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any additional data entry that might not be included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economically efficient for ruling out drug use in many samples, any positive screen needs verification to be suitable for court purposes. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screenings require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the hardest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to cheat: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It outlines a pattern of drug use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
