Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kingston, Illinois. For those requiring drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analyses and have centers nationwide for this purpose. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is suitable. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has significantly grown in recent years. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts now prefer them over urine analysis. These tests suit organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. Hair testing offers the advantage of a longer detection period—up to 90 days—and involves an observed process, making it hard to fake results, but urine tests remain the best choice for recent use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by retaining biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. If obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introduction of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying the sample’s seal and shipment accuracy, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive at Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screens is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptive positive are washed prior to the necessary confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review in line with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows historical usage: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
