Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Clede, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and provide testing facilities in cities across the country equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, although body hair can be used in many cases.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly popular method. Many organizations, from employers to court systems, and even Substance Abuse experts, prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This type of test is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent mechanism for detecting alcohol and drug use. The hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. Positioned near the scalp, hair samples offer a detection window extending up to three months for alcohol and drugs. These samples are straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and effortlessly transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent section of body hair may be collected. When "head hair" is mentioned, it specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory’s drug test result processing encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab’s system, which includes verifying the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not facilitated via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary, rapid drug abuse check. Although it serves as a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

For samples showing presumptive positives at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Up to 90 days of detection, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: The results are highly reliable due to the difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test.
  • Historical use data: Capable of outlining a drug usage pattern over an extended duration, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs take about 5 to 7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables including hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer as the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in La Clede, IL: Hair follicle tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability when compared to traditional urine tests. Since hair tests can trace substance use over a longer duration, they offer more comprehensive insights.

Hair tests are harder to manipulate or cheat, unlike urine tests. This results in a testing method that is both accurate and highly reliable, explaining its favored status in many professional and legal contexts.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in La Clede, IL: Hair follicle testing can track drug usage over an extensive period, up to 90 days, providing a detailed substance history for individuals. This allows employers to have a more thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's habits.

Unlike other drug tests that offer a limited look at usage, the extended detection window of hair tests equips companies with the information needed to make informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
