In La Fayette, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialized centers nationwide, including all cities, are equipped to assist. For accurate results, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored due to their longer detection window, spanning up to 90 days, and their resistance to tampering. Although urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use within the last 5 days, hair tests are an excellent deterrent for those enforcing strict drug-free policies.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers into the developing hair strands. When obtained close to the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month detection span for substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a specimen into the lab system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legitimate in court. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo verification.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration during this phase than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging technique to execute.

Any positive screening requires Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Cheating is challenging: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher due to the difficulty in tampering with results.
  • Illustrates historical usage: It provides a timeline of drug use over months rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other types of testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In La Fayette, IL, the benefits of hair follicle testing over urine testing are evident. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, capturing drug presence in a broader timeframe. Traditional urine tests are limited to recent drug use, typically up to a few days. With hair testing, employers can observe drug history over an extended period effectively mitigating risks associated with short-term detection methods.

Hair tests reduce uncertainty, providing a comprehensive look at substance use. Benefits include:

  • Extended detection window
  • Reduced cheating
  • Improved reliability
These advantages underscore the effectiveness of hair testing for individuals and organizations in La Fayette, striving for thorough drug use assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in La Fayette, IL benefit from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. Hair tests can reveal drug use occurring up to 90 days in the past, far exceeding the scope of traditional tests. This extensive view into an individual's substance history is invaluable for employers looking to make informed hiring choices, as it highlights potential ongoing issues rather than short-term behaviors.

The increased detection period ensures that even occasional users are pinpointed, offering a more holistic understanding of a subject's drug habits. For companies committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace, the longer window for detection arms them with the information needed to foster a safe and productive environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in La Fayette, IL stands out for its robust tamper-resistance. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are significantly less prone to being adulterated, ensuring results remain reliable and trustworthy. The difficulty of altering hair samples makes it nearly impossible for individuals to cheat or manipulate test outcomes, maintaining the integrity of the testing process for all involved.

With hair tests, organizations are assured that the results are an accurate reflection of substance use, free from manipulation.

  • Reduced risk of cheating
  • Consistent and reliable outcomes
  • Robust testing protocols
These features make hair testing a preferred option for those seeking uncompromised accuracy in drug detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
