Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Lakewood Shores, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers available in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals demand hair drug tests instead of urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases use hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly impossible to alter, though urine tests are more accurate for use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to around 3 months. Collecting hair samples is easy, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is sufficient to produce 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. Mention of head hair targets scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial entry of a specimen into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use on the majority of specimens; however, any positive screen must be verified to be legally accepted. Samples that are likely positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive result occurs in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair in concentrations much lower compared to other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid). This complexity makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumed positive specimens are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers notable benefits over traditional urine tests in Lakewood Shores, IL. While urine tests only capture recent drug use, hair testing's detection accuracy spans far longer, typically up to 90 days. This ensures a comprehensive substance use profile that is superior in reliability. The accuracy and robustness of hair tests make them preferable in scenarios requiring extensive detection timelines.

Extended Detection Window

Lakewood Shores, IL sees an advantage in extended detection windows offered by hair follicle testing. Unlike other methods, hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, providing critical insights into an individual's substance history. Employers gain a fuller understanding of potential hires or current employees, aiding in making informed, safety-minded decisions that benefit their organizational culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
