Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Lee, Illinois. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing concentrates on hair-based tests, with locations across all cities in the nation capable of conducting these procedures. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analyzes can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in screening processes has surged. Many workplaces, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days, and their observed, almost tamper-proof collection method. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for various substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Ensure the specimen is weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in lab processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial management of a sample within a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a swift preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical process to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for courtroom acceptability. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further validation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexities of hair drug screening.

For any positive Screening outcome, Confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as appropriate. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screening can detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resilience to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: This method offers patterns of drug use over time, not only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Detectable drug presence in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug screening tends to be pricier compared to other test types.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lee, IL: Hair testing is superior to traditional urine tests, providing enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
