Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lexington, Illinois. With centers nationwide, including all major cities, our expertise in this testing method means you can easily obtain a hair drug or alcohol test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body may be used. Tests are available for drug detection, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke hair testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has risen significantly in recent years for drug screening purposes. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services benefit from its use. The main advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, which is collected under supervision and nearly immune to tampering. Urine tests still lead in detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid inspection for substances of abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that appear positive in the screening phase require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair in lower concentrations than in alternate methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can sense drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection time.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Lexington, IL
Hair follicle testing offers a broader detection window, capturing drug use history that spans up to 90 days, unlike the limited scope of urine tests. This makes it ideal for employers aiming to enforce strict drug-free policies. The unrivaled accuracy of hair tests minimizes false negatives and positives, enhancing reliability in substance screening efforts.

Traditional urine tests, while accurate for recent drug use, lack the extended detection range that hair tests provide. In Lexington, IL, employers are increasingly leaning towards hair testing for its superior sensitivity and up-to-date results. As a dependable alternative, it ensures that any drug use does not go undetected, aligning with long-term workplace safety goals.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Windows with Hair Follicle Tests in Lexington, IL
Hair follicle testing stands out due to its long detection period of up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. This feature is particularly advantageous for employers in Lexington, IL, looking to maintain a drug-free workplace, as it provides detailed insights into an applicant or employee's habits.

Employers can benefit from the extended window of detection that hair follicle tests provide. While other methods only capture recent use, these tests deliver a full story of substance consumption, aiding in better hiring and management decisions. This approach helps ensure a safer working environment by revealing potential long-term drug use issues that might otherwise be missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
