Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lima, Illinois. With expertise in hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized services nationwide, ready to handle hair or alcohol tests at multiple locations. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the head or body. These tests assess for substance, alcohol/ETG, and other standardized or customized hair testing options.

In recent trends, drug testing inclines more towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine samples. Organizations with stringent substance policies, legal systems, and probation subjects utilize hair tests. The main advantage lies in the extended detection timeline, capturing up to 90 days of substance use, collected under direct observation making it hard to tamper with. For recent 5-day abuse, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair effectively captures a long-term record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can reveal a timeframe of up to three months for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should the scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid analysis for substances of abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in the majority of specimens, any positive result demands confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples indicated as presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accentuating why hair drug analysis is notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine analyses that have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Records historical patterns: It chronicles drug usage over a span of time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
