Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in London Mills, Illinois. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and has centers nationwide, including all cities where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body in most situations. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options.

In recent times, drug testing methods more often include hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases favor hair follicle tests. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation and nearly impossible to manipulate. For detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as a robust means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair provides roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, near the scalp yields 100mg of hair—ideal for analysis. For additional testing beyond 10 panels or EtG, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is unavailable, equal body hair can be used. Head hair indicates scalp hair only; body hair includes other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis for drug testing comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's entry into a lab's system. It involves checking the sample's correct sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. While cost-effective, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need secondary validation.

For presumptive positives in Screening, more hair is extracted and readied for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine, making hair screening challenging.

Confirmation uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for verifying positive screens. All presumptive positives are washed when necessary before confirmation. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair test is notably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage trends: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates impact metabolite concentration.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
