Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Louisville, Illinois. If you require drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with centers nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Hair from the head's crown or other body areas (1.5-2 inches long) is generally usable. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can include custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair follicle tests. The key advantage is the extended detection of drug use, up to 90 days, through an observed and tamper-resistant collection process. Nevertheless, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, therefore providing a historical record of substance use. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about 3 months. It's easy to collect, hard to adulterate, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For tests such as EtG or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't present, equivalent body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair. "Body hair" covers all other types (like facial and underarm hair).

Process Overview

The main phases in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the sample's initial entry into a lab's system. This phase checks that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, provides it with a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes other data entries not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, quick evaluation for abused drugs. Although a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples testing positive on Screening must go through a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging to administer.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any samples that test positive are washed as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accrediting standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to its nature, manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, rendering the results more credible.
  • Reveals historical usage: It's able to illustrate a pattern of drug use over longer periods, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent activity: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Louisville, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional methods like urine tests. This method offers enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, critically beneficial for both employers and individuals.

While urine tests are common, hair testing provides a more comprehensive view by catching substance use over a longer duration, making it a preferred choice for those serious about monitoring drug use.

Extended Detection Window

One key advantage of hair follicle testing in Louisville, IL, is its extended detection window. This method allows for tracking drug use over up to 90 days, granting a thorough look into an individual's substance history.

Employers benefit enormously from this extended window as it equips them with the full scope of an applicant or employee's substance use, supporting informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in Louisville, IL, considerably lowers the likelihood of sample adulteration. Hair samples are tamper-resistant, offering reliable and trustworthy results.

Because the testing method is observed and controlled, attempts at test tampering are largely reduced, assuring the outcomes' authenticity and increasing confidence in the results provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
