Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair sample drug evaluations in Malden, Illinois. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair analysis is backed by testing facilities in every city across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be used. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

The approach to drug evaluations has leaned more towards the use of hair sample analysis in recent times. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair analysis over traditional urine evaluations. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation frequently utilize hair tests. The main advantage is its prolonged detection span, typically up to 90 days, with collection being observed, making it almost tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain preferred for detecting recent use within the latest 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs through biomarkers trapped in the growing hair strand fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in much less concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes follows via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can display a pattern of duration drug use, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use cannot be detected: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently described as "hair follicle tests", the procedure itself examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to conventional urine testing in Malden, IL, the advantages are clear. Hair tests offer unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability, outperforming urine tests with their extended detection windows. They capture a wide spectrum of drug usage history, letting employers and legal authorities make informed decisions with superior confidence in the results obtained via hair analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
