Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Maple Park, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is backed by a network of testing centers nationwide, ready to conduct your hair analysis. Typically, we require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, which can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. These tests offer extended detection periods up to 90 days, occur under observation, and are extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month period of drug and alcohol activity. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step in integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was securely sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result must be validated to hold up in legal settings. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this process, drugs are pulled from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug usage trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
