Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Marengo, Illinois. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers nationwide capable of administering a test. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is needed. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are essential for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probationary monitoring. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, with a monitored collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests still hold higher accuracy for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is simple to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. Reference to head hair pertains to scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in a legal context. Any samples indicating a preliminary positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen shows a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging procedure to execute.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples indicating preliminary positives are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are exceedingly challenging to compromise, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a sequence of drug usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent usage: Drugs become detectable in the hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When evaluating drug screenings in Marengo, IL, hair follicle tests offer considerable benefits over urine tests. They provide superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, the results from hair analysis are harder to manipulate and furnish clear insights into longer-term drug use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
